Severe Heat in Oregon Affects Blueberry Crop
Due to dramatic and severe heat and weather in Oregon over the past 48 hours, the quality of the blueberry crop is not suitable for fresh market. We will most likely be very tight on blueberries through the week. Reports from growers indicate that the later blueberry varieties planted will have made it through the heat and we may start to see product the second week of August. Being Monday we are waiting to be updated by these growers.
The gap between California’s Winter/Spring and Fall/Winter blueberry crops is becoming smaller as availability is almost year round. Blueberries are currently coming out of Oregon and Washington, both in the top 5 states for blueberry production. Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey and North Carolina also have large blueberry crops, falling into the top 10 states for blueberry production.

Watermelon Gherkins
Watermelon cucumbers are shaped like baby watermelons. They are about the size of your thumb and are good in salads or pickled. They taste similar to a cucumber with a hint of lemon. Grown by La Granjita Organica in Watsonville. Learn more about this small family farm here.

California Hass Avocado Season Ending
The California Hass season is officially coming to an end. We anticipate California fruit winding down over the next 3 weeks. However, will have Earl’s favorite late season avocado grower out of Cayucos, Traceland, to get us through August and possible into September when Mexican fruit starts to fill the market. Traceland will start up with larger sized fruit in 40/48ct and then move into 60/70ct as the season progresses. As of right now, pricing remains stable but we do feel that it will be a volatile market as supply continues to diminish.

We are already seeing Mexican Flora Loca, or first crop, starting to cross the border. Earl’s Organic will continue to support California growers as we feel that late season California fruit will be superior to Mexican or Peruvian fruit. We look forward to another great season with Equal Exchange this year. We hope to see Equal Exchange Fair Trade avocados as soon as September.
